How to Clean Most Types of Blinds

No matter what kind of blinds you have in your house, the truth is it’s one of the dirtiest spots in the home as they often collect lots of dust! Whether you have proper dusting equipment, a microfiber cloth or are using an old sock, these will all work for dusting your blinds. If you’re pressed for time or looking for an easy way to keep your blinds free of dust, simply close your blinds and go over it with whatever dusting tool you have at hand. Below is a list of how to do a deeper clean of any kind of blinds you may have in your house.

Vinyl, Aluminum and Wooden Blinds

Venetian Blinds are the most popular blinds out there and they come in different materials and both horizontal and vertical. No matter what kind you have, cleaning them is the same. Make sure you start off by removing as much dust from the blinds as possible, using a microfiber cloth or a duster. For horizontal blinds work from top down and for vertical blinds go left to right. Once you’ve dusted, add 3 drops of dish liquid to a bucket of warm water and wring your cloth well. Pinch the cloth around each blind and pull all the way to the other side. Rinse and wring as you go. Make sure you leave blinds open afterwards, so they can air dry!

Tip: For wooden blinds, make sure you don’t use too much water to clean them as you don’t want that water soaking into the wood and thereby bending the wood.

Plantation Blinds AKA Shutters

These can be cleaned just as the previously described blinds. The only difference is that shutters are a bit sturdier and are also divided into smaller or shorter sections. You can choose to follow the above steps or you can choose to buy cleaning tools specific to shutters. The best tool for this purpose is called the Easy Clean Duster. You can use this tool for any kind of blinds you have in your house, but it was made specifically for shutters. After you’ve dusted, go over with a wet cloth, using warm soapy water. Again, if the shutters are made from wood, avoid the use of too much water, as it’ll warp the wood!

Fabric Blinds

For fabric blinds the easiest way to clean them is by using a vacuum. I recommend doing it regularly to avoid heavy dirt buildup which can lead to discoloration. Some fabric blinds can go in the washing machine, so make sure you read the care label before deciding to do so.

Tip: If you’re using a vacuum, use a brush attachment. For this task, a light vacuum is a great choice, but you can also use one with an extendable hose and long want. A bagless upright vacuum with a detachable canister could be a great choice for this.
